James Muldoon
James Muldoon is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Management at the Essex Business School, a Research Associate at the Oxford Internet Institute and Head of Digital Research at the Autonomy think tank. His research examines how modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital platforms can create public value and serve the common good. It explores how notions of freedom, power and democracy need to be rethought in a digital age and what we can do to harness the positive potential of new technology.
Muldoon's non-academic writing has appeared in the Guardian, Time Magazine, the Sydney Morning Herald, Huffington Post, Jacobin, openDemocracy, Tribune, and Overland.
His first book — Platform Socialism: How to Reclaim our Digital Future from Big Tech — was published by Pluto Press in 2022; this was followed by Humans of AI: The Hidden Labour Behind Artificial Intelligence, co-authored with Callum Cant and Mark Graham and published by Canongate in 2024. His most recent book is Love Machines: How Artificial Intelligence is Transforming Our Relationships, published by Faber in 2026.
