Jethro Johnson

Dr Jethro Johnson studied natural sciences at Cambridge University. He followed this with a few years as a committed ecologist which culminated in a PhD at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. His PhD work sought to understand how sea temperatures shape the global distribution of herbivorous fishes, and it was during this time that he discovered the gut microbiome. After retraining as a computational biologist, he moved to the USA to work on the Human Microbiome Project, before returning to the UK to join the Oxford Centre for Microbiome Studies. His current work combines computational and ecological approaches to study the human microbiome, how it interacts with the immune system, and how this influences health and disease.
