Dr Tom Chatfield

Dr Tom Chatfield is a British writer, broadcaster and tech philosopher. His books exploring digital culture — Critical Thinking: Your Essential Guide (SAGE Publishing, 2017), Live This Book! (Penguin, 2015) and How To Thrive in the Digital Age (Pan Macmillan, 2012) — are published in over thirty languages. His most recent book, Wise Animals: How Technology Has Made Us What We Are, was published by Picador in 2024. His debut novel, This is Gomorrah (Hodder), a thriller set in the world of the dark net, was published worldwide in July 2019. It was a Sunday Times thriller of the month, and is shortlisted for the 2020 CWA Steel Dagger for the year's best thriller. 

Tom's interest in technology and cognition spans academia and public life. His textbooks for SAGE Publishing are used at schools and universities across the world, and are bestselling titles in their field; he has also developed award-winning online learning courses for universities and businesses, is a guest faculty member at the Said Business School, Oxford, for its Strategic Leadership Programme, and works as a consultant and advisor with some of the world's leading technology companies.

Tom is currently technology and media advisor at Agathos LLP; a Non Executive Director at the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society and at the Copyright Licensing Agency; a faculty member at London?s School of Life; an Associate at the interdisciplinary think tank Perspectiva, focusing on the ethics of technology; a Master's Committee member at the Economics Research Council; and a senior expert at the Global Governance Institute. His collaborators include Google, Facebook, the BBC, Channel 4 Education, Mind Candy, Shift, Flamingo London, Six to Start, Preloaded, Firefish, Future Lab, Sense Worldwide, SAGE Publications, Sugru and Allianz.

Tom's appearances include TED Global and the Cannes Lions Festival; authors@Google; the World Congress on Information Technology; Science Foo Camp; Intelligence Squared; the Houses of Parliament; Aspen Seminars for Leaders; the RSA, Royal Society and Royal Institution; and venues ranging from the Sydney Opera House to the Googleplex. A launch columnist for the BBC's worldwide technology site, BBC Future, Tom writes and commentates widely in the international media, as well as guest lecturing at universities in the UK and Europe. He is a regular on BBC radio and television, and broadcasts around the world. When not working, he plays jazz piano and drinks too much coffee.
