Two J&N authors have been selected for the category shortlists of the National Book Critics Circle Awards.
Adam Rutherford's debut, A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived, has been nominated for Non-Fiction, while Xiaolu Guo's Nine Continents: A Memoir In and Out of China (Once Upon a Time in the East in the UK) has been nominated for Autobiography.
The awards, begun in 1975 and considered among the most prestigious in American letters, are the sole prozes bestowed by a jury of working critics and book-review editors. The NBCC selects thirty finalists in six categories, with the winners announced on 15th March 2018.
A Wild Swans for a new generation, Once Upon a Time in the East takes Xiaolu from a run-down shack to film school in a rapidly changing Beijing, navigating the everyday peculiarity of modern China: censorship, underground art, Western boyfriends. In 2002 she leaves Beijing on a scholarship to study in Britain. Now, after a decade in Europe, her tale of East to West resonates with the insight that can only come from someone who is both an outsider and at home.
In a captivating journey through the expanding landscape of genetics, written with great clarity and wit, Adam Rutherford reveals what our genes now tell us about human history and what history tells us about our genes. From Neanderthal discoveries to microbiology, from redheads to dead royals, criminology to race relations, evolution to epigenetics, A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived is a demystifying and illuminating new portrait of who we are and how we came to be.
